Money Trees

In several areas around England, there are trees covered in coins dating back for centuries.
In the early 1700s, people hammered small denomination coins into trees to take away sickness. It was thought that if someone else removed the coin, the person who hammered it in the tree would become ill.
Over time, it evolved into a wish for health and luck, kind of like a wishing well.

I have never heard of this before. Maybe I will try hammering a penny into the citrus tree if I get sick this winter :)
