St. Patrick's Day & the Choctaw Indians

In 1847, the Choctaw were living in Oklahoma when they heard about the Great Famine taking place in Ireland. It had been just 16 years since the Choctaw people had experienced the Trail of Tears, and they had faced starvation. Because the Choctaw had starved and suffered along the torturous 500 mile march, they were especially empathetic, and they fund-raised hundreds of dollars to send to Ireland. It was an amazing gesture.

Every year Choctaw Indians are invited to participate in St. Patrick's Day Parades all over the world.
